Planning and Evaluative Commentary
For my Film Noir poster, Paramount would be the ideal institution as it was found in 1912, which is before the making of Film Noir. Paramount has had experience with films from the Film Noir era, films such as; Double Indemnity, the Big Clock and also The Asphalt Jungle among many more. My Film Noir poster would be specifically aimed at both males and females as in my poster the femme fatale is smoking a cigarette looking right at the protagonist without him knowing. During the 1950s and 1960s, most of the men were at war leaving the women to do everything for themselves.
For our Film Noir project, we watched Double Indemnity which helped me with all my research for Film Noir as a genre. After carrying out all my research i was able to pick out all of the conventions i wanted to include in my poster. Some of the conventions i used for my poster were; cigarettes and shadows which really helped my Film Noir poster stand out. On my poster, the femme fatale is smoking the cigarette suggesting how Film Noir is represented in the times it was made. I chose to put my femme fatale behind the protagonist as it shows that she knows everything he is doing and is watching over his shoulder. This shows that she is more superior then the protagonist, which is what Film Noir, is all about. During my draft on Photoshop, i decided to change my femme fatale as she was too convincing and didn’t look like a femme fatale. I also changed my background in my final poster as on my draft it was hard to see my femme fatale.
For my hybrid film poster, I chose to use horror and sci-fi as my two genres. My hybrid poster is mostly aimed at males, as it has the aspects of a terrifying horror along with a sci-fi twist. My poster has a distinct impression that the female on my poster is the one in danger but saying this, she is the only female on my poster, giving the impression that she is the most superior. Legendary pictures and twisted pictures would be the ideal institution for my film poster as both of these have had experience in horror films, for example twisted pictures have been the institution for all the Saw films, which is one of the greatest horrors.
On my hybrid poster I used a lot of shows to show that my poster was a horror but also used the colour red in my title to symbolise blood, which is another convention of the genre horror. I also used a UFO on my poster to distinctly show that my poster was a sci-fi as well as a horror film. For the UFO I played around with the brightness and contrast to get the right exactly texture i needed for my poster so it looked even more terrifying. On most horror film posters, the woman are shown as the most vulnerable people in the film and to emphasise this I also used a female to show her vulnerability.
I was very impressed with how both my posters turned out to look as the Film Noir poster showed how the femme fatale was always the one to look out for, which was evident in my poster. I was equally happy with my hybrid poster as it showed two distinct genres on my poster and I was able to use conventions of both horror and sci-fi as well as Film Noir convention in my Film Noir poster.
